The mission of the Craft Research Fund is to advance, expand and support scholarship in United States.  This grant is provided through the Center for Craft, Creativity and Design located at 1181 Broyles Road | in Hendersonville NC.

The goals of the Research Grant are:

• To support innovative research on artistic and critical issues in craft theory and history.
• To explore the inter-relationship among craft, art, design and contemporary culture.
• To foster new cross-disciplinary approaches to scholarship in the craft field in America.
• To advance investigation of neglected questions in U.S. craft history and criticism.

Starbucks Selects HandMade in America as Grant Recipient

HandMade in America was selected by Starbucks as a recipient of grant funds from the Starbucks Foundation from a program called Vote.Give.Grow. Starbucks is giving $4 million to non-profits all over the country and you get to chose where the money goes. HandMade in America is one of 124 non-profits chosen nationwide to participate, and one of four for the state of North Carolina. We are the smallest of the non-profits chosen in North Carolina, but we serve over four thousand craft artists in the 25 county region of Western North Carolina providing valuable services.  We are also the only one exclusively working within the state.

 

For the month of April 2012, Community Card: Vote.Give.Grow. will give Starbucks customers, for the first time ever, the ability to direct a $4 million investment from the Starbucks Foundation to local non-profits across the U.S. providing innovative community revitalization and needed services for the underserved.

 

HandMade in America was selected to participate because they believe in the power of the handmade object to transform both individuals and communities through education, entrepreneurship and economic development. HandMade in America has an 18-year tradition for pioneering innovative ways to empower the people and towns of Western North Carolina through programs that educate and facilitate the needs of creative entrepreneurs and communities.

 

To participate, customers will choose to make their registered Starbucks Cards a “Community Card” by opting in online. Customers can cast votes once per week throughout the month of April. Whatever North Carolina non-profit receives the most votes will receive the most money, up to $30,000! We appreciate you passing this along to any of your family or friends who are Starbucks fans. Just tell them to vote for HandMade in America!

Peer-to-Peer Technical Assistance grant awarded to HandMade Small Towns by NC Rural Economic Development Center

HandMade will test a new approach to small town revitalization, one which uses volunteers as lead trainers and peer consultants, thanks to a new Economic Innovations grant from the North Carolina Rural Economic Development Center. HandMade's asset-based, citizen-led community economic development techniques are expected to be shared with dozens of additional small communities throughout Western North Carolina and the state during 2011 and 2012.

Judi Jetson, Handmade Director,  will manage this training and technical assistance project, working in partnership with existing HandMade Small Towns, regional and state resource groups to identify success stories and the people behind them, and develop methods and incentives to share success with more people and places. Topics will cover hands-on, how-to examples of ways to make small towns unique and memorable such as renovating an historic courthouse, developing a cultural activity or exhibit, opening a gallery with work of local artisans and more. All will feature small town volunteers as trainers.

HandMade's business model for this Small Towns Institute will use peer-learning as a way to build a sustainable platform and to serve, at a modest cost, towns too small to have paid staff. Currently there are 12 towns actively participating in HandMade's Small Towns Program, and collectively they have created over 600 jobs, 300 new businesses and attracted $53 million in investment over the past decade. The vision behind this proposal is to create the same magnitude of economic growth over the next 10 years by leveraging the knowledge and power of hundreds of citizen leaders in small towns to plan and implement community development projects which create jobs.

John C Campbell Announces Funding Available for Local Arts Organizations

The North Carolina Arts Council Grassroots Arts Program awards subgrants for non-profit organizations whose purpose is to promote and develop diverse cultural arts programming in Cherokee County. The John C Campbell Folk School http://www.folkschool.org/serves as the North Carolina Arts Council's partner in awarding these subgrants.

Funding priority is given to qualified arts organizations (theaters, galleries, choral societies, festivals), arts in education programs conducted by qualified artists, and other community organizations that provide arts programs in the county. Grassroots funds are not generally awarded to arts organizations that receive funding through the North Carolina Arts Council's General Support Program. Projects must occur before May 15, 2011.
