Asheville Art Museum Discussion "On Motherwell"

May 10, 7:00 PM at The Asheville Art Museum (East Wing, Upper Level) - The Essential Idea: Robert Motherwell's Graphic Works. A personal friend and colleague of artist Robert Motherwell during his lifetime, Dr. Mary Ann Caws has written a number of biographies on the artist, including Robert Motherwell: With Pen and Brush. Museum Members and visitors are invited to join a special discussion held in conjunction with current exhibition.

Dr. Caws is a Distinguished Professor
of English, French and Comparative Literature at the Graduate School of the City University of New York. Her many accolades include election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, as well serving as president of the Modern Language Association and the Association for Study of Dada and Surrealism.

The discussion will be followed by a book signing and reception in the Museum Atrium. $5 for Museum Members, $7+ Museum Admission for non-members. Please call 828.253.3227, ext. 120 for more details.

The Essential Idea: Robert Motherwell's Graphic Works Opens Today at the Asheville Art Museum

Robert Motherwell, Mexican Elegy,
March 31 - April 26 at the Asheville Art Museum, 2 South Pack Square in Asheville NC - The Essential Idea: Robert Motherwell's Graphic Works.   A key figure in postwar art, Robert Motherwell was the youngest of the first-generation Abstract Expressionists. His graphic work distinguished him as an innovator and producer of stunning imagery. By the time of his death in 1991, his career had been widely celebrated with countless exhibitions at institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, NY and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC.

The exhibition examines Robert Motherwell's accomplishments as a graphic artist while also exploring these works in the larger context of his artistic production.  A Special Reception and Lecture will be held on Thursday, May 10, 2012 at 7:00 PM with esteemed Motherwell scholar, Mary Ann Caws.

John C Campbell Folk School Celebrates American Craft Week

Join the Folk School in celebrating American Craft Week with  a special reception Thursday, October 13 from 4:30- 7:30  PM in the Craft Shop. space available in some John C Campbell Folk School classes through the end of the year. The Folk School is located at 1 Folk School Road in Brasstown NC (near Hayesville NC)

Meet the Maker: Andrea Donnelly and Dustin Farnsworth

Feb 23 from 7 PM - 9 PM the UNC Asheville Craft Studies Initiative's Meet the Maker series presents  CCCD Windgate Fellows Andrea Donnelly and Dustin Farnsworth . The Meet the Maker series aims to support and generate awareness for contemporary craft practices, professional artists, UNC Asheville’s Craft Studies Initiative and our partnering organizations. These events are designed to present the significance of making, art and craft in Western North Carolina and beyond. The event will be held in the Owen Conference Room, Owen Hall at the University of North Carolina at Asheville, One University Heights, Asheville NC.
