Random Arts Hosts Seth Apter Workshop

June 26 - 28, 2015 at Random Arts 481 Louisiana Ave in Saluda NC: Collage and Stencil Workshops.  These are Seth Aptner's final workshop sessions for 2015.

June 26 - Dimensional Stencils. Stencils are popular and they are perfect in mixed-media art.They are inexpensive, re-usable and easy to store. You will learn how to create textured and dimensional effects using stencils and be introduced to stencil techniques that you may have never thought of. Put all of these new techniques into use with a variety of products and create amazing art. Fee $125. 10 AM - 4 PM. s\Some supplies are required, however the teacher will be sharing his stencils and other products with you.

June 27 -  Collage Camp - this workshop i now full.

June 28 - Picture Windows. Memories of your pet? Special friend? A happy birthday tribute? Start digging out those fave photos and pick out the best ones for this all day workshop and your special gift will be completed by the end of the day. You'll create a double-sided, 3-foot long, hanging montage that is every bit as artful as your photos. Large sheets of watercolor paper will soon transform into beautiful and decorative surfaces using a series of layered paint techniques. You'll then move on to creating the form for the photo display using folding and die cutting techniques. Next comes your photo op where "ordinary photographs are turned extraordinary through a series of hand-altering approaches." Your pieces finally come together, and you leave with both a one-of-a-kind mixed media project as well as a slew of techniques to apply to future projects. Fee $125. 10 AM - 4 PM

Nontraditional Longstitch Binding
with Beth Schaible
Create an array of functional longstitch books, starting with basic stitching and moving quickly to nontraditional patterns.  All levels.  October 5-11.



GLASS
Other Possible Outcomes: Reexamining Glass Beads
with Amy Lemaire
In this workshop we'll reexamine glass beads as portable sculpture that is both personal and public, and we'll consider the body as a site for wearable sculpture. We'll cover traditional and experimental approaches to flameworking as well as cold-working and jewelry fabrication. All levels. October 5-11.

METALS
Surface Adornment on Steel
with Ben Dory
Using steel as a base, we will explore how to transform the surface of this rigid material with texture, thin layers of precious metals, and gemstones. All levels.  October 5-11.

CLAY
A Week of Shino
with Kent McLaughlin
Bring your stoneware or porcelain bisqueware suitable for cone 10 temperatures, and we'll explore a variety of shinos and some of the techniques that are possible with this intriguing glaze, including carbon trapping, wax-resist patterning, manipulated drying, carbon cooling, and glaze layering. All levels. October 19-25.

PHOTOGRAPHY
Rethinking Wet Plate Collodion Photography

In this workshop we'll explore tintypes and ambrotypes - two photographic techniques based on wet plate collodion materials. You'll explore the possibilities of these materials, experiment, and create alternative methods of display for your photographs. All levels. October 19-25.

WOOD
Foundations of Furniture
with Russell F. Gale, Jr.
There are so many things to think about when building a piece of furniture: design, material selection, joinery, edge and surface treatments, shop safety, etc. In this workshop we'll work through these issues and more as we each build a small table. Letterpress Basics & Beyond

Get to know your way around letterpress printing by learning the basics and exploring a variety of ways to create relief prints on a Vandercook press. All levels. Nov. 2-8.

Weaving: The First Layer

By learning to warp with multiple threads, to beam on without tangles, and other tricks of the trade, we can use the process of winding a warp as a way to establish a foundation for fabrics that will go where we want them to go.  All levels. Nov. 2-8.

WOOD | METALS
Carving Wooden Jewelry

Looking to expand your jewelry repertoire? This class will show you how to carve wood on a small scale appropriate for jewelers. We'll cover how to safely carve with both knives and dremels and how to transform these carvings with surface embellishment, findings, and finishing techniques. All levels. Nov. 2-8.

Random Arts Workshops and Events

August 8  -  Creating with Color Pencils with Helen Shafer Garcia   Let your imagination take hold and play with colored pencils on unique black and red surfaces. Light colors will glow and textures pop when pencils glide over the surface. You'll learn about blending methods and layering colors. You start out with a collage prompt poem concept that will indicate the imagery. Drawing abilities are not required - this concept is about learning to see, blending colors and layering to create depth and saturation of color. Giving permission to yourself to create is the first step.  2 spaces remains. 10 AM till 4 PM,  $135.

August 9th  -  Crinkly Birds, Flora and Fauna with Helen Shafer Garcia    Reach into the sky and create Bird themed mixed media paintings on Masa paper and canvas. A special batik like technique with Masa rice paper will create wonderful textures and crevices for the paint to flow into. Draw and paint symbolic iconic birds, flora, and other great, joyful creatures with bold watercolor dropped -in color techniques. Play with colored pencils, ink lines and collage elements to further embellish your paintings. Discover how beautiful and bright watercolors can be with this special process. The watercolor paintings will be sealed with an acrylic varnish to protect the surface. Borders and embellishments will be added with acrylics.  10 AM - 4  PM,  $135.
 

August 10  -  Planed and Folded Wooden Book with Helen Shafer Garcia    There is something about the beauty of wood grain that we all find appealing.  The thin wood shapes that you will use have been planed by hand. Each piece will be very unique. You'll create an extraordinary multi signature hand bound wooden book with painted and textured papers. At least 5 techniques will be taught in this workshop including color pencil on wood, dropped- in watercolor, stenciling, batik-look paper process, and book binding techniques to stitch signatures sewn onto a canvas binding.   10 AM - 4  PM,  $135.
