What do muffin mixes, quinoa & rice mixes & brown sugar have in common?  - They all come in boxes of ideal size to make a book from recycled materials!  We'll cut our box into the shape of a house, cover with tissue or collage papers, then stitch text pages from used brown paper bags. After adding unique collage elements, you'll have a special gift for a journal writer, a guest book or a great place to record your own thoughts, sketches or ideas. September 24, 2016 - Luscious Fibers, Colorful Fabrics, Creative Play with artist Susan Edmonso.  "Wood Violet" Hand Stitched Collage - Tip Toe through the soft green grass to find a sweet little wood violet with Susan Edmonson. She will share with you, her many embroidery stitches, embellishing ideas and simple ways to bring these delightful wood violets to life. By adding bits of lace, trims & Susan's colorful collections of embroidery floss, dyed scrim, silk and more your very special hand sewn project will "bloom" before your eyes. Helen Shafer Garcia returns to Random Arts 

for 3 NEW Workshops 

Helen Shafer Garcia  is as an artist, illustrator, arts instructor and gardener. As her bio states, Helen's paintings are an emotionally drawn encounter with paint, color and texture that invokes the spirit for a intriguing visual journey. Some of the images recount visuals from Mexico, New Zealand and other lands intertwining legends, flora, fauna and icons. She's currently working with watercolor, pastel and mixed media creating contemporary images on paper along with a series of Icon folklore triptychs with wood, watermedia and found object construction.

"NEW" PRINTMAKING 'Know How' with Helen Shafer Garcia - Experimental Watermedia approaches will be explored with watercolor and acrylic with a focus on composition, negative painting, and textures. Build up layers with translucent hues and simple printmaking techniques. Metaphors and messages can play a thoughtful role in your works with added bits of collage and text. Be prepared to loosen up and experiment with different resists and textures to build up the surfaces, paint translucent layers, and create extraordinary shapes. 10 am till 4pm $125. ($10 kit fee payable at time of class).

Colored Pencil "Mixed up" Mixed Media Journaling - (All levels of experience welcome) Colored pencils are such good therapy. Pressing down pure color on smooth paper leads to endless good vibes. Participants combine watercolors, water-soluble pens, and colored pencils while learning clever user-friendly ways to draw. These drawing methods will ease those ever so present inhibitions about drawing lines and shapes. Learn how to blend beautiful color layers and create dark and light mixtures. You'll be prompted to create small poems that will be collaged in a clever way throughout the works. $5.00 kit fee includes: Tombow pens, Chartpak pens, gesso, paper text for collage 10am till 4pm $125.

Featured Adornments with Helen Shafer Garcia - (All Levels of Experience Welcome) Pick up a brush and immerse into your creativity with watercolor, color pencils, water-soluble pens to create an enriched, "hair with an attitude" portrait. Adornments, ribbons and jewels are all this girl needs. Drawing doesn't have to be something just "artists" do. Learn simple ways to see the shapes and lines of the face. We'll work on a special crinkly textured rice paper that will accept paint beautifully. Paint and ink will flow into the crevices of this paper giving the painting a wonderful aged look. We'll use pens to make marks and paint with watercolor, letting the colors blend & fuse together naturally. We'll also add translucent and iridescent layers to create a rich jewel tone surface. Dive into detail with colored pencils, ink lines, & adornments to embellish the shapes. Limit 12 students $5.00 supply fee includes: White gouache, metallic paints, white ink, acrylic soft gel and varnish. 10 am til 4pm $125.

Random Arts Hosts Seth Apter Workshop

June 26 - 28, 2015 at Random Arts 481 Louisiana Ave in Saluda NC: Collage and Stencil Workshops.  These are Seth Aptner's final workshop sessions for 2015.

June 26 - Dimensional Stencils. Stencils are popular and they are perfect in mixed-media art.They are inexpensive, re-usable and easy to store. You will learn how to create textured and dimensional effects using stencils and be introduced to stencil techniques that you may have never thought of. Put all of these new techniques into use with a variety of products and create amazing art. Fee $125. 10 AM - 4 PM. s\Some supplies are required, however the teacher will be sharing his stencils and other products with you.

June 27 -  Collage Camp - this workshop i now full.

June 28 - Picture Windows. Memories of your pet? Special friend? A happy birthday tribute? Start digging out those fave photos and pick out the best ones for this all day workshop and your special gift will be completed by the end of the day. You'll create a double-sided, 3-foot long, hanging montage that is every bit as artful as your photos. Large sheets of watercolor paper will soon transform into beautiful and decorative surfaces using a series of layered paint techniques. You'll then move on to creating the form for the photo display using folding and die cutting techniques. Next comes your photo op where "ordinary photographs are turned extraordinary through a series of hand-altering approaches." Your pieces finally come together, and you leave with both a one-of-a-kind mixed media project as well as a slew of techniques to apply to future projects. Fee $125. 10 AM - 4 PM

May 2, 10 AM to 4 PM:  Need a hand made Mother's Day Gift? Sunny invites you to learn how to paint whimsical, fun characters using a variety of techniques and supplies. Learn how to capture the expression of these fun characters and create "absurd" body types. It's sure to be a day without pressure and a humorous day of painting whimsical little people from your own imagination. Even if you think you can't draw, Sunny will guide you in a way that will allow you to find as many characters that appeal to you, rather than just copying her style. You'll complete as many as your creatuve hands and heart can handle in this full day class. Beginners are more than welcome.

May 3, 10 AM - 4 PM:  Favorite Pet? Lovable Character? Huggable You? Try your hand in this workshop with the gentle guidance of Sunny at your side. "Perky Paper Mache' Pretties" on Sunday will get your hands down and dirty with paper mache', paint and plenty of action. You will find yourself jumping into a day of making faux paper mâché characters. Using Sunny's method, you will learn how to "Mâché the Easy Way" and make as many 4" x6" "characters" as you can turn out in this full day workshop. Beginners are more than welcome and you'll need very few supplies for this class.

Sunny Carvalho is a mixed media artist living in Alabama amidst the chaos of too many art supplies. Focusing on hand-sculpted ceramic dolls and pendants and mixed media paintings, her quirky characters have found their way into many of the mixed media magazines. Sunny is an instructor at Art is You (Petaluma, and Benecia, CA, Nashville, Memphis, Minneapolis), and Art Unraveled (Phoenix), as well as various individual studios. Random Arts Begins 2015 Workshops this Month

February 13 and 20 at Random Arts, 481 Louisiana Ave in Saluda NC - local artist Miriam Hughes shares her one of kind watercolor techniques.

February 27, 28, March 1 -   Jodi Ohl from Aberdeen NC. 10 AM - 4 PM each day.
2/27 - "Grunge Ink"    During this action packed and fun filled class participants create a variety of Inked up abstracts on an amazing surface which will allow you to add, subtract, draw, drip and more as you create one of a kind grungy abstract mixed media art pieces.  Bring your fearless artistic self and come prepared for hours of grungy inky fun and creative experimentation.

This class is for those who love to experiment, or for those that want to be more adventurous in their art. Works will be done on Yupo paper,  incorporating a variety of acrylic inks, paints, India ink and tons of special effects to garner intriguing and luscious layers.  All skill levels are welcome. The process can be as simple or complex as you desire. Cost: $125 for a full day.

2/28, 3/1 -  Extreme Portraits  Learn ways to build more depth in your portrait painting with this newest portrait class offered by Jodi Ohl that will help you take your portrait work to the next level, even to a cutting edge extreme. In each of the lessons over the 2 day course, you will find easy to follow directions and content that is rich in information that you can use not just in your portrait work, but a variety of mixed media applications. The focus in this class will be more on painting and building up layers through glazing and underpainting techniques as well as much more. Cost: $230 for 2 full days of fun filled painting and collage

Random Arts will continue to guide your creative journey this year with 10 months of fabulous instructors including 2 full weeks with internationally known artist, Gillian Lee Smith (aka Gillian Cox) from England. This will be Gillian's first and only teaching venue in the US for 2015 and it is quite an opportunity to learn from this fine mixed media artist while enjoying the beautiful, historic town of Saluda nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina.

Along with mixed media art supplies, fine art supplies and basic craft items, you will find artsy clothing at Random Arts that completes your creative image and your "young at heart" spirit.

Winter hours are Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM with Zen Doodle continuing every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month at 10 AM.

August 8  -  Creating with Color Pencils with Helen Shafer Garcia   Let your imagination take hold and play with colored pencils on unique black and red surfaces. Light colors will glow and textures pop when pencils glide over the surface. You'll learn about blending methods and layering colors. You start out with a collage prompt poem concept that will indicate the imagery. Drawing abilities are not required - this concept is about learning to see, blending colors and layering to create depth and saturation of color. Giving permission to yourself to create is the first step.  2 spaces remains. 10 AM till 4 PM,  $135.

August 9th  -  Crinkly Birds, Flora and Fauna with Helen Shafer Garcia    Reach into the sky and create Bird themed mixed media paintings on Masa paper and canvas. A special batik like technique with Masa rice paper will create wonderful textures and crevices for the paint to flow into. Draw and paint symbolic iconic birds, flora, and other great, joyful creatures with bold watercolor dropped -in color techniques. Play with colored pencils, ink lines and collage elements to further embellish your paintings. Discover how beautiful and bright watercolors can be with this special process. The watercolor paintings will be sealed with an acrylic varnish to protect the surface. Borders and embellishments will be added with acrylics.  10 AM - 4  PM,  $135.
 

August 10  -  Planed and Folded Wooden Book with Helen Shafer Garcia    There is something about the beauty of wood grain that we all find appealing.  The thin wood shapes that you will use have been planed by hand. Each piece will be very unique. You'll create an extraordinary multi signature hand bound wooden book with painted and textured papers. At least 5 techniques will be taught in this workshop including color pencil on wood, dropped- in watercolor, stenciling, batik-look paper process, and book binding techniques to stitch signatures sewn onto a canvas binding.   10 AM - 4  PM,  $135.

March 29  and 30 from 10 AM to 4 PM  - 2 full days of a "hands on" approach to the inside story and techniques for using Golden Acrylic Paints:

-Explore fascinating effects that will help you move your painting up to the next level.

-Fiber Paste and Absorbent Grounds to achieve a water color look.

-The magic of Acrylic Skins for layering that is super natural.

-Mixed Media Monoprinting, using Open acrylics and the Gelli plate.

-Learn new Color palettes 

-Metallic and Interfence that 'pop' your top (layers, that is).

She will share specific color information, bring you up to speed on which texture mediums to use for which tasks, and introduce you to High Flows and Open Acrylics. Collage, Painting, Printmaking, Skins.  Prepare to be astonished.

WHAT TO BRING TO THIS WORKSHOP:

*Surfaces to work on - rigid substrates - could be canvas panels, wood panels or gesso panels, whichever you prefer. If you are traveling, it is easiest to bring flat panels that don't have a cradle behind them. Bring from 2-4 in any size up to 12x12. If you work fast, bring more, if you work slow, bring less, but be prepared to work back and forth across more than one piece.

*Bring your favorite Golden Fluid Acrylics - a couple colors only.  There will be will bring a lot of additional colors so you can develop a specific palette around colors you already own.

*Brushes suitable for painting. Inexpensive brushes (such as the ones by Robert Simmons) work fine and Shader and Angle Shader brushes about an inch wide are Mary Beth;s preference. Bring a glue brush also.

*Water container, apron, gloves, pencil, scissors, small cutting mat, palette knife (if you already own one) and a small selection of collage items.

*Your $20 kit fee includes use of a wide variety of Golden products including paints and texture mediums. There will also be additional substrates for everyone to try including Watercolor paper, printmaking paper and Claybord. Plus there will be pencils, markers, Gelli plates, deli paper and other items to share. If you happen to own a small Gelli Plate and wish to bring it, feel free.

March 7, 1 PM - 4 PM    Angelic Inspirations   Summon your Guardian Angel, your muse, you most trusted source of inspiration during this paint and collage mini class. Using limited color palettes, texture, and simple yet layered designs, participants will create 2 6x12 "Angelic Inspiration" works during this 3 hour session. Come play and have fun and walk away with great pieces to keep or give as inspirational gifts to those you love. $65 fee.

March 8, 10 AM - 4 PM    Podabilities   Re-discover your inner child with doodles and playful finger painting as you layer your way to abstract windows to our world of "Pods-Abilities". Create colorful abstracts that are a touch on the side of whimsical, full of playful marks (you will even make own stamps and stencils), and truly deep layers of fun scribbles, doodles, and little windows of fun. This is a full day of class where you will explore many painting techniques that you can carry forward in a variety of ways, not just for this amazing project. Some painting knowledge helpful but more important, your willingness to explore and let go of what you 'know' and discover a whole new world of mixed media art and fun. $110 fee.

March 9, 10 AM - 4 PM  Texturize This Live!    Are you ready to be immersed in color and luscious texture, or looking for something new to add to your work?  Are you willing to let go, experiment and be open to possibilities, even happy accidents?   You'll dive into a world of shimmering color, tantalizing texture and mysterious layers during this full day of experimenting on a surface that will make your paintings sing with intensity. Be a painterly scientist as you uncover ways to work with contemporary abstract compositions that employ exciting textural designs and layers.  By manipulating the surface with heat, glazes and 3D mediums, you will be creating work that is truly unique and fascinating. Your work will amaze everyone. $110 fee.

  

Jodi Ohl is a self-taught mixed media artist, originally from Dunkirk, NY, who now resides in Aberdeen, NC. Having recently left her day job to pursue her artistic career full time, she is has built a body of work that is known for its distinctive texture, bold color combinations, often whimsical or abstract compositions, as well as motivational in nature.  Her art appeals to those that seem to be young at heart and who appreciate the positive side of life whether communicated through words, colors, or composition.    

Published in a variety of international mixed media magazines such as Cloth Paper Scissors, Somerset Studios, Artful Blogging, Artful Journaling, Somerset Holidays and Celebrations, and Cloth Paper Scissors Studios, as well as a contributor to two mixed media books, Art at the Speed of Life by Pam Carriker and Cloth Paper Scissors, The Book by Barbara Delaney, Jodi enjoys writing about her art and sharing the love of healing and motivation through creativity.  She is represented by regional galleries in North Carolina  and in her home state of NY.  In addition, Jodi is a popular mixed media art teacher online and in person, teaching at both large and small local and national workshops around the US.  When not painting, she enjoys time with her two sons, Josh, 12 and Zach, 18 as well as other friends and family.

Random Arts November Events

November 19 - last Zen Doodle "drop in" of the year. Zen Doodle from 10 AM until noon on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays and everyone is welcome. NO pre-registration and NO FEE. Just show up and enjoy 2 hours of zen tangling in a stress-free environment.

November 22 -  Learn the "ever so popular" Gouache Resist technique for your holiday cards. From 10-2 you will delve into the 7 step process of this unique form of art. Pre-registration is necessary and the space is limited. $20.

November 23  - "Random Play Days".  It's a NO stress environment where others join in to work on their own projects on their own time. Holiday card rush? Finish them here. Need a large table to lay out a project? Do it here. Random Arts is ready, willing and eager to have you join them for a day of creative play. No pre-registration necessary.

Random Arts Zen Dooble for February

Even though the Random Arts studio will be transformed into an Artists Gallery for the month of February the popular Zen Doodlesessions will continue in another one of the facilities cozy spaces at the shop.

A couple of comfy chairs, a pen and a journal is about all that are needed. Think HEARTS for the 5th and participants make a few amazingly zendoodled cards or designs. It will be fun to get back together.

August 28, 10 AM - 2 PM  - Art Journaling.  NO charge - NO pre-registration.  Join like minded artists in learning new techniques from each other for your art journals.   From color, to adhesives, to quotes, words or texture. It's total inspiration for 4 glorious hours.  You'll be encouraged and gently nudged  into being creative - it's a safe place.  Bring any supplies or projects that you want to work on.

August 30, 10 AM - 2 PM - Sketch and  Paint Glamour Shots.  It's so easy you won't believe it until you see it for yourself. You will want to frame it, it will be that good. $25. (short supply list) Pre-register by phone (828-749-1165) or email.

August 31, 10 AM - 2 PM   Tattered and Torn Bird.  By ripping, tearing or cutting scraps of paper, you will create a "one of a kind", framable masterpiece to keep or give as a gift. August 24, 1 PM - 3 PM -"Making paper from scraps" (email  to register)  You will make lots of 5 x 7 sheets of handmade paper to take home with you the same day. You will have the opportunity to add an assortment of natural elements to your papers including hydrangeas, fibers, mesh, threads and more to create unique one of a kind natural papers. It's fast, easy and fun for all ages. August 25, 10 AM - 2 PM - Nature Print Stamping  (email  to register)  Rubber Stamping with Fred Mullett Stamps. They are pulling out the  "oldies but the goodies" for  this one and using some of the "tried and true" techniques with these timeless rubber stamps. These nature print stamps include Ginkgo leaves, Teasel, Menapachi Fish, Ferns and more that were created directly from nature itself. Cards, collage, watercolor, stencils and more. June 29, 10 AM - 4 PM -  only 3 spaces left at the Monoprinting on fabric workshop conducted by Jane LaFazio. Not only can you experience Mono printing but Jane will also offer 2 of her popular Sketch & Watercolor workshops that have filled up every time that she has come to Random Arts.
