Sutherland Handweaving Studio Workshop

March 17, 9 AM - 4 PM  at Southerland Handweaving Studio, 122 Riverside Drive, Asheville, NC - A Good Yarn: A One-Day Hands-On Seminar with professional handweaver and author Laura Fry.This is a great opportunity for local weavers and sewers to learn from a nationally recognized instructor.
A Good Yarn is designed to help weavers better control their end results. Laura discusses fiber characteristics, yarn spinning and how weave structure and density affect the finished textile. This is a tabletop workshop with no loom required. Extensive handouts are provided.

Laura Fry has worked as a full-time professional handweaver since 1980. Her focus has evolved from a concentration on table textiles to weaving yardage for a fashion designer. She teaches throughout Canada and the U.S., and earned certification in 1997 as one of Canada’s Master Weavers. Her meticulous approach to weaving is characterized by her attention to wet finishing, and she shared her expertise derived from years of research in the book Magic in the Water, which includes actual fabrics before and after wet finishing.

Weaving Classes at John C Campbell Folk School

Weaving is the craft that's probably most identifiable as traditionally Appalachian. The  weaving program at John C  Campbell Folk School honors traditional roots while celebrating new and creative innovations in the craft. The diversity of classes will teach beginning or seasoned weaver techniques such as doubleweave,  weaving with found objects, or Sakiori- Japanese rag weaving.

In just a week or weekend class, you'll produce beautiful table runners, place mats, bags, rag rugs, and scarves you will be proud to tell your friends you made. View a list of available weaving classes for the rest of this year. Visit the Folk School Flickr page for more weaving photos.
