Cloth Fiber Workshop Studio Expands


Cloth Fiber Workshop located at 122 Riverside Drive, Studio D  in the River Arts District in Asheville, NC has expanded! The facility is in the same terrific studio but now inhabits the entire space.Now there is more room to spread out and plenty of space for everyone's creative energy!

Also new at Cloth Fiber Workshop: basket making workshops. Make a small gem out of natural materials in a one day workshop!
July Workshops:
Encaustic Painting for Textiles on Saturday, July 16 with Celia Gray. You'll cover the basics of this ancient technique of painting with transparent and pigmented beeswax. Within the methods of encaustic painting, you'll direct your focus towards techniques with a textile sensibility. Students are encouraged to bring cloth materials and past projects to collage with. Level of experience: all levels. Fee: $85 + materials fee. (This workshop is full. August Workshops:
Print + Collage + Stitch: Layered Imagery on Cloth on Saturday, August 13 with Bernie Rowell. Alter commercial fabrics by monoprinting with paint to create your own hand-made marks. Then build imagery using fused collage and stitched detail. Structural and finishing techniques for small textiles will also be discussed. Level of experience: all levels. Fee: $85 + materials fee.

September
Shibori + MX Dyes on Saturday, September 3 with Heather Allen-Swarttouw. The focus of this workshop is exploring pattern, color and imagery thru Shibori or resist dying using Procion MX dyes. Working with natural fibers and stitching, clamping, and pole wrapping you'll create patterns of color. MX dyes are translucent and work wonderfully over dyed fabrics adding another layer of pattern and color. A wonderful rayon scarf will be provided in addition to the fabrics you bring to experiment on. you'll learn safe studio procedures and how to cure and steam set the MX dyes. Level of Expertise: all levels. Fee: $95 + materials fee.
Basket Making: Locust Spiral on Friday, September 30 with Peggie Wilcox. In just one day you'll create a basket using natural materials. First you'll use Cedar Bark spokes arranged in a hexagon/star pattern. Then twining with Iris leaves, you'll spiral up the sides with stripes of Locust bark. To help with shaping, foot and neck borders will be incorporated. Your finished basket will measure 2 1/2"  x 3". Level of Expertise: all levels. Fee: $110 + materials fee.
October
Basket Making: Bulrush & Iris on Saturday, October 1 with Peggie Wilcox. In this workshop you'll explore the use of basket molds with soft, natural plant materials. You'll start with Bulrush stakes and twine up the sides using Iris leaves. Other techniques such as cordage for handles and the use of a simple foot border will be taught. Gathering and prep of materials will be discussed. Instructor will provide basket molds. You'll leave the workshop with a finished basket measuring 2-4" x 3-5". Level of Expertise: all levels. Fee: $110 + materials fee.
