This informal artist discussion will be led by several artists currently featured in Fire on the Mountain: Studio Glass in Western North Carolina, including: William and Kate Bernstein, Ken Carder, Rob Levin, John Nygren, Mark Peiser, and Yaffa and Jeff Todd. Author Joan Falconer Byrd will also discuss her new book, Harvey K. Littleton: A Life in Glass, Founder of America's Studio Glass Movement. Byrd's book is available in the Museum Shop.

Third Thursdays Return At The Blowing Rock Art and History Museum

April 19, 5 PM at Blowing Rock Art and History Museum, 159 Chestnut Street in Blowing Rock NC.  Bestselling author Sharyn McCrumb  kicks off BRAHM's Third Thursday Speaker Series celebrating the opening of the exhibit "From Secession to Sesquicentennial: Remembering the Civil War" (Historic Objects Gallery).

McCrumb's book Ghost Riders,  a tale of the Civil War that chronicles the experiences of North Carolina lawyer (and eventual Governor) Zebulon Baird Vance and Avery county resident Melinda Blalock, who dressed as a man to fight for the Confederate Army,  was re-released in 2011 by John F. Blair publishers. Boone historian and author Michael C. Hardy will join McCrumb for the event.

The evening will also feature a reception celebrating the opening of the Civil War exhibit in the Historic Objects Gallery, curated by ASU public history graduate students. McCrumb will hold a book-signing afterwards and copies of Ghost Riders will be available for purchase, as well.

The 2012 Third Thursday series will take place in the spacious Community Meeting Room, a welcome venue change from BRAHM's former office space. Admission for most Third Thursday lectures will be free for members and $5 for non-members, unless otherwise noted.

Blowing Rock Art and History Museum Exhibit Opening Reception

April 10,  6:30 to 8  PM at the Blowing Rock Art and History Museum  (BRAHM) , 159 Chestnut Street, Blowing Rock NC -  Exhibit preview reception for Curious Collections. Hors d'oeuvres and drinks will be served. Cost for the reception will be $30 payable at the door.
What do quizzical face jugs, G-scale model trains, colorful tobacco tags, wooden outsider folk art, a Remington bronze and handmade pieced quilts have in common?  They will all be a part of the upcoming exhibit, Curious Collections, which will open to the public on Wednesday, April 11.

The exhibit includes a wide variety of fascinating objects from nearly 30 collectors from across North Carolina, exploring not only the rich histories of the objects but also delving into the psychology of collecting, which is deeply entrenched in human nature. In the process, exhibit guests will be encouraged to uncover the collector in each of us.

The exhibit, chosen because of its wide-ranging appeal and lighthearted nature, will run from April 11 through the first of August.

Celebration of Artworks PRIMED at the Asheville Art Museum

March 23, 7:30 - 11 PM:  Members and Friends PRIMED Launch Party this Friday night, think creative cocktail (a little dressed-up or dressed-down, whichever your preference), with white embellishment for a little added flare! For men: white necktie or bow-tie suggested, but not required.

This new family art center will expand the Museum's already vital educational programming and will provide a new opportunity for the children of WNC to grow and learn through hands-on, interactive art activities. Blowing Rock Art and History Museum - This month's Third Thursday has been MOVED to THURSDAY,AUGUST 25.  Jonathan Stuhlman, curator of American art at the Mint Museum, will present "How to Read a Painting" at 4 p.m. in the BRAHM office,  upstairs in the Martin House (1098 Main Street). A reception and refreshments will follow.

Jonathan Stuhlman is the curator of American Art at the Mint Museum in Charlotte. He is a co-curator of the Mint Uptown's current exhibit "From New York to Corrymore: Robert Henri and Ireland." In "How to Read a Painting," Stuhlman will help art lovers learn to understand what artists hope to convey while continuing to appreciate their work from a purely aesthetic viewpoint.  For information about Third Thursdays, call 828.295.9099.

Film Screening today and tomorrow at the Asheville Art Museum

Saturday and Sunday, August 6 and 7 (2:00 p.m. daily) - Film Screenings at the Asheville Art Museum:  They Shoot Horses, Don't They?   Free with Membership or Museum Admission.

This 1969 multi-award nominated film by Sydney Pollock still packs a punch in its unblinking view of Depression-era life, the time period that spawned the federal Works Progress Administration. Starring Jane Fonda, Gig Young and Susannah York. Held in conjunction with Artists at Work: American Printmakers and the WPA.

Asheville Art Museum Updates

July 25 (5:30 p.m.) ArtFacts: On Display with Dean Butckovitz  Admission: $5 for Members and $6 for non-Members (includes refreshments). Dean Butckovitz, Preparator/Registrar and the Curatorial Staff will guide participants in the aesthetics and logistics of showcasing your collection in the home. ArtFacts is the Museum's newest program, and offers instruction about fine art collecting in a four-part series. 

Anna Jensen featured for July

Museum Shop Featured Artists of the Month: Anna Jensen  Stop by the Museum to explore Anna's hand- painted ornaments, trinket boxes, note cards and more. Anna moved to Asheville from New York City and exhibits her work often. She recently presented her work at the Museum's Pecha Kucha Night, the most recent ARTmob event!  Anna's work will be featured in the Museum Shop throughout the month of July.

New Exhibit Opens tomorrow at the Asheville Art Museum

A Tisket A Tasket: Appalachian, Cherokee, and Low Country Baskets  opens July 15 in the Holden Community Gallery at the Asheville Art Museum. The exhibit features local Cherokee basket makers Bessie Jumper, Lucille Lossiah and Marian Wolfe, as well as local Appalachian basket makers Harold Evans, Patti Quinn Hill and Billie Ruth Sudduth. There will be a reception from 5:30 - 7:30 PM for the exhibit whci wil continue through January 8, 2012.

A Tisket A Tasket: Appalachian, Cherokee, and Low Country Baskets looks at the three predominant approaches to basket making, cultural influences, styles of baskets and the range of materials and methods. More details here.

Color Study opened in the Appleby Foundation Gallery on July 9, 2011. An Opening Reception will be held Friday, July 15  from 5:30 - 7:30 PM,  FREE with Membership or Museum Admission.

Color Study provides a lively discourse between contemporary and historical works and tackles a variety of critical issues surrounding color. The works in this exhibition use color as their primary means of expression. Whatever their stance on these issues, the artists in Color Study all share a steadfast devotion to the exploration of color.
