September 16 - 17, 2016: Screen Printing: Non-traditional Methods with Heather Allen Hietala. This workshop explores the incredible versatility, fun, and immediacy of using a blank silk-screen as a creative tool. We will use blank screens and play with non-traditional methods of screen printing to create texture and images. Simple and immediate stencils, masks, and resists on the screen and on the cloth will allow us incredible flexibility to explore and develop personal marks, textures and iconography. This class is about experimenting with mark making, pattern and image possibilities using silk-screens in an intuitive painterly way. We will use textile paints that are immediate and non-toxic. Bring your ideas, and creativity and see what can happen. You will go home with a blank screen, squeegee and all the information to continue screen-printing at home. Level of Expertise: all levels. December 10, 2016: Classic Shibori and Indigo ll with Amy Putansu. The classic Japanese shibori designs can be combined and manipulated to create original motifs and compositions. This one-day workshop will focus on pairing traditional stitching and binding techniques on cotton or linen to be dyed in organic indigo. Innovation and experimentation are encouraged in this workshop, and results will be apparent by the end of the day when fabric is dyed. Part II of Classic Shibori is open to all students new and returning, but will build upon techniques explored in Part I (offered in June 2016). Level of Expertise: all levels. Fee: $95 + materials. Cloth Fiber Workshop Begins 2015 Workshop Schedule
March 19, 20, 21, 2015 - Dyeing Primary and Secondary Colors Naturally with Catharine Ellis
. Using
indigo blue and a selection of yellow and red dyes you'll achieve greens
and violets. The workshop will incorporate all of the skills needed by the natural
dyer: fiber preparation, indigo vat use, mordanting, and dyeing with
plant or insect dyes.
The workshop will begin with using an organic indigo vat, and then preparing both protein and cellulose fibers for dyeing. You'll use mordants specifically for immersion dyeing as well as mordant printing. A palette of greens and violets will be developed by over-dying indigo blue with yellow and red dyes. You'll learn how to finish naturally dyed fibers and investigate why the sequencing of color is so important in creating mixed colors.
The workshop will begin with using an organic indigo vat, and then preparing both protein and cellulose fibers for dyeing. April 19 - 100% Plants: Dyeing Silk and Wool in One Step with Catharine Ellis. In this workshop you'll learn about the dyes that can be used to make fast colors on protein fibers using only tannins and organic acid instead of a mineral mordant (alum). May 9 & 10 - Embroidery! with Heather Allen Hietala. Are you a textile enthusiast yearning to stitch and embellish? If so, this is a workshop you won’t want to miss! This workshop will introduce a long list of traditional embroidery stitches to use with a contemporary flair. You’ll learn stitches that are known across Europe, the Americas, and Asia and make a sampler using your initials—a fun way of experimenting and documenting ideas for future reference. Threads will be available in a variety of weights and textures. You will leave the workshop with the confidence to add embellishment to your work and to create textures and patterns allowing for self-expression in thread. June 7 - Abundant + Local + Natural: Plant Dyes with Dede Styles. In this workshop you'll accompany Dede
into the field to learn about abundant local dye plants, where to find them, how to identify them and when to collect them. Afterwards you'll return to the studio to make at least two dye baths and learn some tricks of the trade to create additional colors using color modifiers. Level of Expertise: all levels. Cloth Fiber Workshop Offers two more Workshops for 2013
November 23 - Contemporary Rug Hooking with Yarn with Betsy Archer. Rug hooking! Learn to create contemporary designs with yarn on linen. First you'll prepare the linen for hooking and then transfer a pattern onto the fabric. Then you'll learn to color plan your project and use rug-hooking tools. Everyone will use the same pattern but you'll be able to change the design to make it unique. Level of Expertise: beginner/intermediate. Fee: $85 + materials.

First you'll create resists with shibori then place the fabric into a silk-scour bath. The resisted areas will retain the crispness of organza while the areas left exposed will dissolve into a very fine sheet of silk. Cloth Fiber Workshop offers Dye and Shibori Resists with MX Class
August 17 - 18, 10 AM to 5 PM at Cloth Fiber Workshop, 122 Riverside Drive, Studio D in Asheville's River Arts District - Shibori Resists with MX Dyes with Heather Hietala. The focus of this workshop is exploring pattern, color and imagery through
Working with natural fibers and stitching, clamping, and pole wrapping you'll create controlled yet not, patterns of color. MX dyes are translucent and work wonderfully over dyed fabrics adding another layer of pattern and color. A wonderful rayon scarf will be provided in addition to the fabrics you bring to experiment on. Safe studio procedures using MX dyes will be covered. Level of expertise: all levels. Fee: $175 + materials fee.

Cloth Fiber Workshop: Permanent Pleats + Color on Cloth
May 26 at Cloth Fiber Workshop, 122 Riverside Drive, Studio D in Asheville, NC - Permanent Pleats + Color on Cloth with Amy Putansu. Permanently pleat, crease, and manipulate fabrics by heating and reshaping fibers.
You will also apply color in the same step, using specially formulated dyes. The technique is appropriate for synthetic fibers. The dyes are called Disperse, are readily available online, and require no additional chemicals.
You'll shape and dye a series of samples, and then create up to 3 scarves, depending on complexity. There will be discussion about how and why this process works, as well as resources for using this technique at home. For more ideas, look at clothing designer Issey Miyake, or textile designer Junichi Arai. Fee: $85 + materials fee.

While working with diverse fabrics, basic tools, simple block structures, and reading craft and quiltmaking research, you'll begin to identify and engage with the many approaches (material, social, commercial, spiritual, symbolic) used in quiltmaking. In-class hand sewing affords the opportunity for each quiltmaker to work on her or his own quilt-top while talking and sharing as a group and learning about quiltmaking in American culture.
