Penland Students Hold Empty Bowls Event This Week
November 2 - 6, 2015 at the Penland School of Crafts Coffee House: Empty Bowls Project. Students in the clay concentration with Suze Lindsay and Kent McLaughlin are hosting an Empty Bowls event this week at the Penland Coffee House. Visitors can make a $20 donation to fight hunger, enjoy a simple lunch-time meal of soup prepared by the Penland kitchen, and take home a unique bowl made by a student in the class.
The Empty Bowls meal will be available at the Penland Coffee House from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
The Empty Bowls Project at Penland was started twenty-five years ago by Lisa Blackburn and John Hartom, who live nearby in Yancey County. The success of the project spread rapidly, and today communities around the globe join the Empty Bowls Project by offering a simple soup meal served in donated handmade bowls as a reminder of all of the empty bowls in the world.
The money raised from each event goes to a hunger-fighting organization chosen by the hosts. The Penland project’s proceeds will go to Mitchell County Shepherd’s Staff, a non-profit organization providing food and heating assistance to Mitchell county residents in need.

Historic Pisgah Forest Pottery Celebration Today
July 20-21 Celebration at Pisgah Forest Pottery - Pisgah Forest was established in the early 1920s as the third pottery of Walter B. Stephen. Stephen's potting began in 1904 and he established North Carolina's first art pottery, Nonconnah, in Skyland in 1913.
Several things are remarkable about this site. It has been preserved by Stephen's step-grandson, Thomas Case, virtually as it was in the 20s and 30s. The original equipment, kilns, glaze containers, etc. are as photographed in that era. Also his contributions to American ceramics are nationally recognized. His two most important are his crystalline glazes, the first developed in the South, and his cameo decorations of American folk life scenes. On the cameo works he recalled his early days in the west near the Sioux Indians.
Free guided tours of the pottery and demonstrations of Stephens's early pottery techniques by Rodney H. Leftwich, author of the book on Pisgah Forest Pottery. .These talks will be informal and ongoing both days. Located 3 miles south of I-26 exit 33 ( Biltmore Square Mall). Follow Hwy. 191 past the Arboretum and Parkway. Event is on the left.

Artist Statement: "I am a functional ware potter living in Black Mountain, North Carolina. The practical focus of my work is to create utilitarian pottery with mostly porcelain clays and a wide variety of unique glazes. In my most recent work I am using a variety of colors to enhance the textural, organic surfaces. My pieces are designed for giving and they represent a convergence of the dual passions for creation and service. I imagine the works as vehicles for hospitality, as they offer and receive simultaneously. I like to consider the pots in the context of what they are destined to hold and how they will fit into ever changing design trends. Pottery has a timeless element because of its deep history and that is important to me as I strive to make the pieces that are also relevant to my love for interior design."

Media: Clay
Location: Curve Studios, 12 Riverside Drive, River Arts District in Asheville NCMedia: Clay
About: Satake was a music producer in New York City, overworked and stressed-out. In search of a little relaxation, he took a pottery class and as the expression goes, the rest is history. Thanks to an invitation from a cousin for a visit Asheville Satake and his family discovered the "community" they were seeking. Two years ago he moved his studio to Curves at the River Arts Districe. His work shows the power of nature's forceswith a style representing the collaboration between himself, clay and fire. He thinks of landslides, the wind dusting through the desert, volcanoes and other natural occurrences nature continually surprises the human eye with. He is influenced by and respects traditional pottery, but strives to create his very own style, with depth over his creations. Read more about Akira Satake HERE.
