Asheville Art Museum February Events

February 11,2017 from 10 AM-2 PM: Introduction to Screen-Printing. One of the most versatile printing methods, screen-printing uses simple tools and can be applied to a wide range of materials. Participants in this workshop are introduced to the practical and artistic forms of screen-printing and techniques such as open screen, photo silkscreen, paper block-outs and flocking through demonstrations, experimentation and discussion.

Instructor Kevin Hogan was born in Liverpool, England. He makes sculptural installations, paintings, prints, drawings and mixed-media artwork. His earlier work was almost entirely black and white, focusing more on line and shape within the work. His experimentation with printmaking led to an exploration of color. He has exhibited in North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Texas, New York, France and Germany.

February 19,2016 at 3 PM at Biltmore United Methodist Church - Pianoforte with Les Downs. Dr. Leslie Downs is active as both a solo and a collaborative pianist. He has performed in solo, lieder, chamber, and choral concerts throughout the United States and in Canada. He has also served as music director for regional musical theatre productions. For 16 years he worked as a freelance pianist/teacher/vocal coach in New York City. He currently serves as Music Director for the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Asheville.

The program will include works by Joseph Haydn, Manuel de Falla, Charles Tomlinson Griffes, Claude Debussy, Alexander Scriabin and Isaac Albéniz.

February 24, 2017 from 5:30-8:30 PM at Hi-Wire Brewing Big Top, 2 Huntsman Place in Asheville NC - TOAST Asheville. As the Museum is "Making It New" during construction, they are also re-inventing the annual TOAST Asheville event and are excited to be partnering this year with Hi-Wire Brewing. The evening will be a festive gathering with plenty of unique Hi-Wire beers and partner wines to sample, local tasty food, brewery tours, and a silent auction. Entertainment is generously provided by Appalatin, whose foot-stomping, hip-swinging sounds organically unite Appalachian folk and high-energy Latin music.

Asheville Art Museum Work of the Week: Squid Under Pier by Minna Citron. Minna Citron (1896-1991) was a painter and printmaker best known for her Social Realist images of New York City. Citron studied at the Art Students League with John Sloan and Kenneth Hayes Miller, and she later was associated with a group of Realist painters known as the 14th Street School. In the late 1930s she taught art and painted murals for the Works Progress Administration. By the early 1940s, abstraction became her primary style.

Pincu Pottery Fall Events

Pincu Pottery - Offers a wide selection of handmade, functional pottery pieces inspired by nature. Potter Elise Delfield is also a faculty member at Southwestern Community College in the Heritage Arts program and has taught at John C Campbell Folk School . She is an active member of The Southern Highlands Crafts Guild.   Pincu Pottery offers classes to both adults and children during which you can learn how to make your own pots.  Individual instruction and pottery tools are also available.

October 7-8:  Elise will teach a workshop at Sawtooth School for Visual Art in Winston-Salem, NC. There is still room to register. This is a demonstration workshop, not hands-on, so everyone is welcome to come and watch and learn.

October 20-23:  Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands in Asheville NC at the U.S. Cellular Center in downtown – This is where you will find Elise selling her beautiful pottery to all those folks in need of gifts, for themselves or other.

November 4:   CLAY OLYMPICS!  Elise won it once. Can she do it again? Come watch her try!

November 5:  WNC Pottery Festival is THE BEST place to buy pottery. Come to Dillsboro NC and enjoy the beautiful scenery and amazing talent.

November 12: Southwestern Community College’s Ceramics Club will host the Heritage Arts Festival and Elise will be one of 2 Demonstrating artists.  Come support local crafts and the ceramic students of Southwestern (some of her students will be exhibiting)

November 25-26:  Stecoah Valley Artisan Drive About is an event featuring numerous artists who open their studios and offer light refreshments to those willing to drive the beautiful roads in Swain and Graham Counties and stop in to visit each participating studio.

September 24, 2016 - Luscious Fibers, Colorful Fabrics, Creative Play with artist Susan Edmonso.  "Wood Violet" Hand Stitched Collage - Tip Toe through the soft green grass to find a sweet little wood violet with Susan Edmonson. She will share with you, her many embroidery stitches, embellishing ideas and simple ways to bring these delightful wood violets to life. By adding bits of lace, trims & Susan's colorful collections of embroidery floss, dyed scrim, silk and more your very special hand sewn project will "bloom" before your eyes. There will be a kit provided with the class from Susan however there will be a list of some additional things to bring along. $80. 10 AM until 4 PM.

Penland Iron Workshop Students Show Impressive Skills Completing Campus Project

Penland School of Crafts summer’s session 5 iron workshop with Hoss Haley and Warren Holzman brought together a talented bunch of students with big ideas and impressive skill. Together, the class designed, constructed, and installed a new bronze and steel handrail on campus. The project included eight custom supports, hours at the power hammer, 44 feet of forged cap rail, and a whole lot of teamwork. We think the results are just stunning.

Heat, patience, and an eye for detail make all the pieces come together smoothly.

The new railing is a big improvement over the standard blue railing it replaced.

Penland School of Crafts is a national center for craft education located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. Penland offers 1, 2, and 8 week workshops in books & paper, clay, drawing, glass, iron, metals, photography, printmaking, textiles, and wood. The school also sponsors artists' residencies, outreach programs, and an exceptional craft gallery. The gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday and is located on the campus at 3135 Conley Ridge Road in Penland NC, just outside Spruce Pine NC. 

 

A Splash of Color Afternoon at The Cashier's Senior Center

September 14, 2016 from 1-3 PM at The Cashiers Senior Center: A Splash of Color - Afternoon Book Signing/Reading and Art Show/Sale. 

The public is invited to a showcase of talent at the Cashier’s Senior Center featuring a new book written by the seniors, “A Splash of Color, Art and Stories Woven from Life’s Fabric,” and an art exhibit displaying the many talents of the seniors at the Cashier’s Senior Center. There will be a reading by the seniors, followed by a book signing and reception. All sales will be going toward providing for the seniors further classes without fees. 

 “A Splash of Color” contains the writings and art work of the seniors, drawn from classes offered through Southwestern Community College: “Writing From the Heart Series” with Amy Ammons Garza, and “Pastel Painting” workshops with Doreyl Ammons Cain.” Stories, poems and prose are taken from the lives of the writers and contain humor, mystery, reflections, opinions and wisdom. Some of the titles are “Holiday in Cyprus,” “Shadows,” “Retirement,” “Alligator Wrestling,” “The Mystery of the Painting,” and more.

WIngate Fellowship Grant Artist Talks at Asheville's Center for Craft, Creativity and Design

February 26, 6 - 7:30 PM at the Center for Crafts, Creativity and Design, 67 Broadway Street in Asheville NC: Windgate Fellowship Project Grant Artist Talks with Andrea Donnelly, Aaron McIntosh, and Mark Reigelman II.

To celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Windgate Fellowship Award in 2015, marking $1.5 million awarded to 100 emerging craft artists nationwide, CCCD expanded the program to include three $10,000 project grants awarded to previous Windgate Fellows. The 2015 Windgate Fellow Project Grant recipients are Andrea Donnelly (Richmond, VA), Aaron McIntosh (Baltimore, MD), Mark Reigelman II (Brooklyn, NY). Donnelly, McIntosh, and Reigelman will travel to Asheville, NC on February 26 to deliver a series of rapid fire artist talks and project updates, including:

Smokers - Mark A. Reigelman II, Brooklyn, NY.  Smokers looks at mysterious and commonplace symbols of the city, transforming one of New York's many steam emitting pipes with a meticulously fabricated mini cabin that rests on top.

The Crown Jewel Project - Andrea Donnelly, Richmond, VA. The Crown Jewel Project explores questions of the false dichotomy of conceptual versus functional weaving, looking at value, object, art and labor using "scarf" as conceptual canvas.

Invasive - Aaron McIntosh, Baltimore, MD. Invasive subverts the negative characterization of invasive species and uses queer kudzu as a demonstrative tool of visibility, strength, and tenacity in the face of presumed "unwantedness".

Cloth Fiber Workshop Begins 2015 Workshop Schedule

March 19, 20, 21, 2015 - Dyeing Primary and Secondary Colors Naturally with Catharine Ellis
. Using indigo blue and a selection of yellow and red dyes you'll achieve greens and violets.  The workshop will incorporate all of the skills needed by the natural dyer: fiber preparation, indigo vat use, mordanting, and dyeing with plant or insect dyes.

The workshop will begin with using an organic indigo vat, and then preparing both protein and cellulose fibers for dyeing. You'll use mordants specifically for immersion dyeing as well as mordant printing. A palette of greens and violets will be developed by over-dying indigo blue with yellow and red dyes. You'll learn how to finish naturally dyed fibers and investigate why the sequencing of color is so important in creating mixed colors. 

Each participant will complete a notebook of samples in wool, silk, cotton and linen. Level of Expertise: All levels
 Fee: $310 + materials fee.

Random Arts Begins 2015 Workshops this Month

February 13 and 20 at Random Arts, 481 Louisiana Ave in Saluda NC - local artist Miriam Hughes shares her one of kind watercolor techniques.

February 27, 28, March 1 -   Jodi Ohl from Aberdeen NC. 10 AM - 4 PM each day.
2/27 - "Grunge Ink"    During this action packed and fun filled class participants create a variety of Inked up abstracts on an amazing surface which will allow you to add, subtract, draw, drip and more as you create one of a kind grungy abstract mixed media art pieces.  Bring your fearless artistic self and come prepared for hours of grungy inky fun and creative experimentation.

This class is for those who love to experiment, or for those that want to be more adventurous in their art. Works will be done on Yupo paper,  incorporating a variety of acrylic inks, paints, India ink and tons of special effects to garner intriguing and luscious layers.  All skill levels are welcome. The process can be as simple or complex as you desire. Cost: $125 for a full day.

2/28, 3/1 -  Extreme Portraits  Learn ways to build more depth in your portrait painting with this newest portrait class offered by Jodi Ohl that will help you take your portrait work to the next level, even to a cutting edge extreme. In each of the lessons over the 2 day course, you will find easy to follow directions and content that is rich in information that you can use not just in your portrait work, but a variety of mixed media applications. The focus in this class will be more on painting and building up layers through glazing and underpainting techniques as well as much more. Cost: $230 for 2 full days of fun filled painting and collage

Random Arts will continue to guide your creative journey this year with 10 months of fabulous instructors including 2 full weeks with internationally known artist, Gillian Lee Smith (aka Gillian Cox) from England. This will be Gillian's first and only teaching venue in the US for 2015 and it is quite an opportunity to learn from this fine mixed media artist while enjoying the beautiful, historic town of Saluda nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina.

Along with mixed media art supplies, fine art supplies and basic craft items, you will find artsy clothing at Random Arts that completes your creative image and your "young at heart" spirit.

Winter hours are Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM with Zen Doodle continuing every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month at 10 AM.
