Michael Sherrill and Stoney Lamar

Join the Museum for this special half-day, small-group tour to visit the Western North Carolina studios of two master artists working in natural media, plus a delicious locally sourced lunch! The first stop is to the Bat Cave studio of Michael Sherrill, a materials-based artist experimenting primarily in clay, metal, and glass whose handmade objects explore the intersection of humans and materials in the natural world. Then participants head over to Saluda for a tasty lunch at The Purple Onion, known for its organic ingredients and simple, healthful Mediterranean-inspired menu. After lunch the group visits the studio of Stoney Lamar, whose unique multi-axial lathe work gives his wood sculptures a distinct sense of movement. Work by both Sherrill and Lamar is featured in the Museum’s and other public and private collections around the country.

Come discover the art of play in our interactive Art PLAYce! This monthly program for pre-school aged children accompanied by an adult occurs on the third Tuesday of each month, and features a fun activity designed especially for our young visitors plus time to explore the Museum galleries.

This Tot Time  will be your last chance to enjoy the original Art PLAYce before construction begins! Look for the Education team in your community presenting Tot Time at local libraries and community centers.

WIngate Fellowship Grant Artist Talks at Asheville's Center for Craft, Creativity and Design

February 26, 6 - 7:30 PM at the Center for Crafts, Creativity and Design, 67 Broadway Street in Asheville NC: Windgate Fellowship Project Grant Artist Talks with Andrea Donnelly, Aaron McIntosh, and Mark Reigelman II.

To celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Windgate Fellowship Award in 2015, marking $1.5 million awarded to 100 emerging craft artists nationwide, CCCD expanded the program to include three $10,000 project grants awarded to previous Windgate Fellows. The 2015 Windgate Fellow Project Grant recipients are Andrea Donnelly (Richmond, VA), Aaron McIntosh (Baltimore, MD), Mark Reigelman II (Brooklyn, NY). Donnelly, McIntosh, and Reigelman will travel to Asheville, NC on February 26 to deliver a series of rapid fire artist talks and project updates, including:

Smokers - Mark A. Reigelman II, Brooklyn, NY.  Smokers looks at mysterious and commonplace symbols of the city, transforming one of New York's many steam emitting pipes with a meticulously fabricated mini cabin that rests on top.

The Crown Jewel Project - Andrea Donnelly, Richmond, VA. The Crown Jewel Project explores questions of the false dichotomy of conceptual versus functional weaving, looking at value, object, art and labor using "scarf" as conceptual canvas.

Invasive - Aaron McIntosh, Baltimore, MD. Invasive subverts the negative characterization of invasive species and uses queer kudzu as a demonstrative tool of visibility, strength, and tenacity in the face of presumed "unwantedness".

Weekend Film Screenings at The Asheville Art Museum

November 15 - 16 at 2 PM at The Asheville Art Museum, 2 S Pack Square in downtown Asheville NC - Visions of Mary Frank.   This new film is a window into artist Mary Frank's vision. Frank's creations never fit into neat categories of Abstract Expressionist, Pop, Conceptual, new expressionism or outsider art, and yet her work is in nearly every major American museum. 

Her explorations take form in drawings, triptychs, paintings, prints, photographs and sculpture. In clay, magnificent female figures emerge from the earth, evoking mythic gods and human frailties. Rated: NR. 55 minutes.

This event is Free with membership or Museum admission.

NC Arts and Crafts this weekend at the Ooh La La Curiosity Market

September 14   Ooh La La Curiosity Market    An outdoor market in Asheville's downtown Pritchard Park featuring works by local painters, leather smiths, jewelry makers, potters ,up-cycled crafters, and other curious delights, all beneath the colored canopies of large market umbrellas.

In addition to the artists, the market will also feature live local music with up three musical acts performing each Saturday and will include everything from a solo saxophonist to folk, blues, acoustic, and jazz acts.

June 11   Discussion Bound (monthly reading group):  The American Painter Emma Dial: A Novel  by Samantha Peale.  3:00 - 5:00 PM. in the Museum Library. The event is Free with membership or regular Museum admission.  In a New York Times book review, critic Deborah Solomon wrote of the author, "In her witty and impressively observed debut novel Samantha Peale has given us what is probably the first novel narrated by a studio assistant in New York in the 21st century." Peale, who was a studio assistant to sculptor Jeff Koons for four years, gives readers a cautionary tale and glimpse into a sought-after position in the art world.

June 15   Legacy: The Emily Fisher Landau Collection   This traveling exhibition of the Whitney Museum of American Art remains on view through September 8  OPENING RECEPTION: JULY 13, from 5:00 - 7:00 PM.  Legacy: The Emily Fisher Landau Collection presents a selection of works from the historic gift of art pledged to the Whitney Museum of American Art in May 2010 by longtime Whitney Museum trustee Emily Fisher Landau. Considered one of the preeminent collectors of postwar art in the United States, Emily Fisher Landau's personal approach to collecting has long paralleled that of the Whitney, an institution similarly devoted to the art of its time.

June 18, 10:30 AM  Enjoy Tot Time in the Museum's Art PLAYce for Children. This event occurs monthly on the third Tuesday of each month.  Free with membership or regular admission (ages 5 & younger admitted free).   Parents with pre-school age children are invited to bring their youngsters to the Museum's interactive Art PLAYce for Children for a new monthly series called "Tot Time", featuring a new guided art activity designed especially for tiny tots each month. Discover the art of play through this new Education program of the Museum! Participating children must be accompanied by an adult.

June 21,  12:00 - 1:00 PM   Lunchtime Art Break Aaron Siskind: Abstract Expressionist Photographer. This event is Free with membership or regular Museum admission.  Enjoy a guided tour and discussion of Aaron Siskind.

Parking information:
Free HandMade in America parking is available in the Wild Wing Cafe overflow parking lot, located on Church Street. The gravel lot that is located directly across from HandMade in America has turned into paid parking. Parking on the street is free after 6:00pm, and there is a new public parking garage two blocks away, located at the Aloft Hotel.

 

This December, HandMade in America is excited to  host its first annual Cool Craft Market: Holiday Edition. This Market will feature 25 vendors from around Western North Carolina, selling both functional and decorative items including clothing, accessories, pottery, natural products, kitchenware, and ornaments. The Cool Craft Market will be a fantastic place to find one of a kind gifts ranging from $5-$300, just in time for the holidays!

 

On Friday, December 14th from 5-8:00pm HandMade in America is having a VIP Preview Party, with item donations to benefit Homeward Bound of Asheville, a group with a mission to end chronic homelessness in the city. Guests of the party will have their first choice on market items as well as free food and drink to celebrate the holiday season. Come enjoy local craft and local music by the Willows. Gallery Minerva Presents Anne Bachelier

Gallery Minerva has announced that internationally acclaimed figurative artist, Anne Bachelier, will be joining the gallery on Saturday, November 10th, from 6pm - 9pm  to celebrate her latest body of paintings, drawings and the first edition release  of her most recent book, 13 Plus One.

13 Plus One is an anthology of short stories and poetry by Edgar Allan Poe, profusely illustrated by Bachelier. This first edition release includes a Standard Edition of the book as well as a very limited Collector's Edition. Please contact the gallery for details.

 

Asheville Art Museum Urban Loft Tour 2012

October 11, 4:30 - 9:30 PM: Asheville Urban Loft Tour benefit for the Asheville Art Museum. Tour some of Asheville's most stunning downtown lofts, filled with original art and upscale furnishings and help support the Asheville Art Museum.

The Tour is followed by a reception, "Art for Art's Sake",  6 PM - 9:30 PM, hosted by the Cotton Mill Studios.  For tickets check in at the Art Museum's front desk or call 828-253-3227.  Artists of The Historic Cotton Mill Studios, located in the River Arts District at 122 Riverside Drive, are generously hosting a reception following the Urban Loft and Art Tour. 40% of art sales during the reception directly benefit the continued growth of the Asheville Art Museum and its capital campaign, Art WORKS for Asheville.  Free admission; participation on the Tour not required to attend reception.

Transportation to the Reception:  The event sponsor, the White Trolley Line (Asheville's Historic White Trolley Tours), will shuttle guests from the final stop on the walking tour to the benefit reception at The Historic Cotton Mill Studios, and back to the Museum throughout the evening.

Opening Reception at The Asheville Art Museum

Mel Chin's work evades easy classification. Analytical and poetic, he conjoins cross-cultural aesthetics with complex ideas. His investigations explore our natural and social ecology and the ways art can provoke greater social awareness and responsibility.

The Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands

July 19 - 22   65th Annual Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands   Over 200 exhibitors, craft demonstrations, and live regional music and entertainment bring Asheville's Civic Center alive with fine traditional and contemporary crafts. Both levels of the Center offer artisans exhibiting and selling works of clay, fiber, glass, leather, metal, mixed media, natural materials, paper, wood and jewelry. 

The Fair  showcases the work of members of the Southern Highland Craft Guild with members living in the mountain counties of nine states from Maryland to Alabama.

Asheville Art Museum Lunchtime Art Break

July 13, 12:00 - 1:00 at the Asheville Art Museum, 2 S. Pack Square in Asheville NC:  Ancient Forms, Modern Minds: Contemporary Cherokee Ceramics. This is an Artist-Led Tour and Discussion Cherokee potter Joel Queen, whose works are featured in the current exhibition Ancient Forms, Modern Minds.

Among the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians there are a wide array of talented artists working in different media. In this exhibition, the Museum explores ceramics made by contemporary artists who blend contemporary and traditional designs and techniques.

The Asheville Art Museum offers a series of gallery talks and presentations, "Art Breaks", designed to engage Museum visitors in dialogue with staff members of the Curatorial and Education departments, Museum Docents and special guests such as featured artists.

Lunchtime Art Break Today at the Asheville Art Museum

June 29, 12 - 1 PM at The Asheville Art Museum, 2 South Pack Square in Asheville NC.  The 50th Anniversary celebration of WNC's Studio Glass Movement continues with a Curator-led tour of  Fire on the Mountain: Studio Glass in Western North Carolina.

The exhibit celebrates the history of the Studio Glass movement over the past 50 years and its ties to Western North Carolina. It provides an overview of the aesthetic and technical developments between 1962 and the present, particularly as the movement relates to the artists who live and work in the region.

Fine Art Print Fair at The Asheville Art Museum

June 22-24   Fine Art Print Fair  Hosted by the Asheville Art Museum the Fair will showcase dealers from around the United States and will appeal to both beginning collectors as well as more seasoned ones. Dealers will offer something for every taste or budget, from old master prints to contemporary photographs. A Preview Reception: Friday June 22, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. ($35 Museum Members,  $45 non-Members)

River Arts District Studio Stroll

June 9-10, 10 AM - 6 PM Head for the River Arts District Studio Stroll and a  weekend full of artist demonstrations, workshops, family fun and amazing art. 180 artists of various mediums open up their studios to share their talent. A few highlights of the June Stroll include:

 - Visit Court McCracken at The Hatchery Studios Studio #141 both days from 2-2:30 for the Top 3 Ways to Begin Nurturing Your Creativity Today.

 - Stroll on in to Studio 375 Depot and right into Planet Art for a Chair Caning demonstration both Sat & Sun 12-4.

 - Watch Stephen Lange in his studio at the Wedge building do some Design Demos both Sat-Sun 12-6.

The Stroll is the first, largest, and most walkable tour of working artists’ studios in the region. The River Arts District Studio Stroll takes place in 19 historic buildings along the French Broad River. There are artists’ demonstrations and hands-on activities throughout the weekend.

Getting to and around in the River Arts District is a breeze. Accessible by car from Downtown, West Asheville, and Biltmore Village, there is plenty of parking. Catch the trolley at any of the stops listed on the map.  During the Studio Stroll, an Information Booth is located at the 5-points intersection of Depot St. across from the Clingman Café.

Clingman CIrcle Celebration and Ribbon Cutting

June 5 in the River Arts District in Asheville NC - Clingman Circle Celebration: A celebration, a dedication, a representation and a completion in the River Arts Distrtict.  The gathering begins at 5:30 PM at the Hilliard and Clingman intersection, followed by a ribbon-cutting at 6 PM for the recent completion of the $1.2 million Clingman Avenue streetscape enhancement project.

Then the party moves down the hill into the River Arts District. Join Mayor Bellamy, community leaders and supporters for a celebration of the enhancement project in the River Arts District. Top the night off with a benefit, music and silent auction at the Grey Eagle for the "RAD ONE Neighborhood Benefit." 

Mother's Day Event in the River Arts District

May 12    Oh Mother!  at the Odyssey Center in Asheville's River Arts District.   A celebration of Mother's Day at the Center for Ceramic Arts. 10 AM - 6 PM all day events include Raffle to win a piece of art by Michael Parry; Delicious Refreshments;  Over 40 featured Artists;  Gifts for Mom complete with flowers and wrapping. Live music by Maggie and the Romantics.

Don't miss one of WNC's Favorite Studio tours this Weekend

May 12-13   Weaverville Art Safari A free, self-guided tour of artists' home studios in the scenic area surrounding the villages of Weaverville and Barnardsville, North Carolina. Weaverville is located just 10 minutes north of Asheville. Visitors are granted direct access during Safari weekends to the home studios of a wide variety of local artists and a few visiting artists. The Art Safari will be preceded, as usual, by a gala preview party & silent auction on Friday night, May 11.
