This Week at the Blowing Rock Art and History Museum

September 10, 2015, 5 PM - 6:30 PM at The Blowing Rock Art and History Museum (BRAHM), 159 Chestnut Street in Blowing Rock NC - Opening Reception for Unity with Diversity. The free reception kicks off the exhibit by the Blue Ridge Women Painters: Beth Andrews, Marion Cloaninger, Marsha Holmes, Susan Marlowe, and Norma Suddreth. The artists will also teach a free art workshop on Thursday, Sept 24 from 5:30 – 6:30 PM in the museum’s Education Center.

The Exhibit can be viewed in BRAHM’s Community Gallery from September 9 – October 1, 2015.

Sue Grier's Pottery Artist Reception

January 15, 5:30 - 8:00 PM at Beverly-Hanks Discovery Center in Biltmore Park Town Square, 1 Town Square Blvd, Asheville NC -  HandMade in America invites all to pottery artist Sue Grier's Artist Reception.

Sue is originally from New Mexico where she studied oil and arcrylic painting at New Mexico State University. After moving to South Carolina 20 years ago, she began to pursue her interest in clay. For years she worked in Columbia, SC as a production potter, attending workshops at Arrowmont and Penland. Sue had considered herself a self-taught potter until 2004 when she decided to attend Clemson University to pursue a MFA. After graduating, she took a part-time position teaching ceramics at Clemson where she taught for 6 years.
Sue Grier currently lives in Leicester, NC, where she has her studio and focuses on one-of-a-kind functional and decrotative pieces.

the North Carolina Museum of Art and Penland School of Crafts present 0 to 60

Beginning this month, the North Carolina Museum of Art and Penland School of Crafts present 0 to 60: The Experience of Time through Contemporary Art, an exhibition featuring thirty-two international artists with over sixty works of art blurring the boundaries between art, craft, and design. The partnership includes a fully illustrated catalog that documents the projects at both the NCMA and Penland. 

Seventeen new works have been created for 0 to 60 and five North Carolina artists and eleven artists affiliated with Penland are featured in the exhibition. This is the first collaboration between these two highly-recognized North Carolina art institutions.

"Focusing on the concept of time and its influence on art, the exhibition looks at how time is used as form, content, and material, and how art is used to represent, evoke, manipulate, or transform time," said NCMA Chief Curator and Curator of Contemporary Art Linda Dougherty. "It's especially notable to have Penland involved in the exhibition, since 'time' is one of the critical resources their facilities provide for the artists who come to the school for a creative retreat where they can work literally around the clock."

The artists represented in the exhibition are Caetano de Almeida, Dan Bailey, Walead Beshty, Jana Brevick, Jim Campbell, Paul Chan, David Chatt, Kyoung Ae Cho, Sonya Clark, Alison Collins, Tara Donovan, Dan Estabrook, John Gerrard, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Hoss Haley, Tim Hawkinson, Lisa Hoke, Tehching Hsieh, Richard Hughes, Anne Lemanski, Jeff Chien-Hsing Liao, Beth Lipman, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Vera Lutter, Peter Matthews, David Shapiro, Tom Shields, Jennifer Steinkamp, Do Ho Suh, Stacy Lynn Waddell, Michael Wesely, and Bill Viola.

The exhibit opens on March 24 and continues through August 11, 2013.

Emerging Artists Exhibit at Black Mountain Center for the Arts

March 10 from 3 PM - 4 PM the Opening Reception for the The Emerging Artists Exhibit at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts. The exhibit features the works of the students who take art classes at the Center under Bob Travers and Cheryl Keefer. Students range in age from 8 to retirees.The exhibit continues through April 5, 2013.

The Black Mountain Center for the Arts offers live theatre, classes and an exhibition gallery. The Center is located in the renovated Old City Hall at 225 West State Street in historic downtown Black Mountai NC. The Center includes Special Events as well as changing Gallery Shows.

The Carolina Mountains: Photography of Margaret Morley Exhibit at The Blowing Rock Art and History Museum in Blowing Rock

February 21 at The Blowing Rock Art and History Museum (BRAHM)  Come see the newly painted gallery and "The Carolina Mountains: Photography of Margaret Morley"  exhibit of more than 50 photographs from the North Carolina Museum of History's collection.

These hauntingly beautiful images depict everyday life and the natural beauty of western North Carolina at the turn of the 20th century. The exhibit, made possible in part by a grant from the North Carolina Humanities Council, a statewide nonprofit and affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, will be displayed at BRAHM through April 25, 2013.

Ismini Samanidou Exhibit "TOPOGRAPHY" Opens this month at The Center for Craft, Creativity and Design

January 18,  5-7 PM at The Center for Craft, Creativity & Design, 1181 Broyles Rd. in Hendersonville NC - "Topography" Exhibit Opening and Lecture with Ismini Samanidou. Textile artist and designer Ismini Samanidou seeks to understand her encounters with beauty through crafting woven surfaces and installations. Utilizing both mechanical jacquard looms and hand weaving techniques, her creative process becomes a way to document her own story. She often photographs her travels and reinterprets them with thread. Themes of transience, decay, and history emerge through her poetic textiles.

Ismini Samanidou was born in Athens and trained at Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art, London. Her work involves designing and making textiles for exhibitions, commissions, and collaborations, focusing on the use of digital weaving technology and designer maker methods, touching on the boundaries of craft, art and design.

This exhibition is a partnership project between The Crafts Study Centre, University for the Creative Arts and The Center for Craft, Creativity & Design. A catalog to accompany the exhibition is published by the Crafts Study Centre.

125 S. Lexington Ave., Suite 101, Asheville NC.  Ismini Samanidou will discuss her practice and developing work, including her approach to and influences of travel experiences. Samanidou will include information on her exhibition, Topography.

New Jim Carson Exhibit Opens in Saluda

December 15 - Jim Carson Exhibit Opening   The Saluda Center will host a show of Jim Carson's oil paintings from his recent three week plein air painting trip to France. The show, titled "Paintings from Paris and the French Countryside," will have an opening reception from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. The exhibit will be on display through January 15.

HandMade in America Exhibition and Opening Reception

November 30 - February 22 2013 FLUX:A Craft Exchange

HandMade in America has been working with Flux Studios of Mt. Rainier, Maryland, a suburb of Washington D.C., to exchange exhibits in an effort to share new ideas and demonstrate the importance for artists to stay abreast of national trends. Flux Studios resident artists will be exhibiting work at HandMade in America while artists from the Odyssey Center for Ceramic Arts will be showing at Flux Studios; these handcrafted items will travel nearly 500 miles.

 

Flux Studios is an arts space in Northeast DC that houses the studios of six professional sculptors, a large classroom space and an informal exhibition gallery. The underlying concept behind Flux is one of exploration, experimentation and dialog among its members and the greater arts community. Odyssey Center for Ceramic Arts is an Asheville-based school and studio which promotes the understanding, appreciation and professional development in the ceramic arts.

 

Novie Trump, founder of Flux and one of the residents featured in the exhibition says, “We are delighted to collaborate with HandMade in America on an exchange exhibition.  This is a wonderful opportunity to introduce artists and collectors in the DC area to the work of NC ceramicists.  In addition, the members of Flux are excited to present our work to the arts community in Asheville. This continues our tradition of exchange and our desire to engage in an active dialogue with artists and arts enthusiasts both nationally and internationally.”
