Art Crawl this Friday in Boone

July 2   Friday Art Crawl   in Boone North Carolina. Reserve NOW for Penland's Annual Auction

Penland School's 25th Annual Benefit Auction will be held August 13-14, 2010.  The Penland School of Crafts Annual Benefit Auction is a gala weekend in the North Carolina mountains featuring the sale of more than 230 works in books, clay, drawing, glass, iron, letterpress, metals, painting, photography, printmaking, textiles, and wood. The Penland auction is one of the most important craft collecting events in the Southeast and a perfect opportunity to support Penland's educational programs, which have helped thousands of people to live creative lives.

Reservations are required. Tickets are limited to 400 and the event often sells out quickly; early reservations are recommended. Reservations will be accepted until the auction is filled.  Absentee and phone bids are accepted for all auctions until noon on Friday, August 13, 2010, for a fee of $25 (includes catalogue). All ticket purchasers and absentee bidders receive an illustrated catalogue in July. Images of artwork and details about absentee bidding will be posted on our website in late June. Catalogues are available for $25.

June 28 - 30   See  Live Craft Demonstration  at the Parkway Craft Center at the Moses Cone Manor, Milepost 294 Blue Ridge Parkway. This week's Guild Member is  Lee Entrekin  demonstrating flute making. Parkway Craft Center is one of the five shops of the Southern Highland Craft Guild and features work from over 300 Southern Appalachian craftspeople. Work on display includes objects of clay, glass, leather, fiber, jewelry, wood, natural materials, paper and metal.

The Storytelling Center in Bryson City Needs Quilters

The Storytelling Center in Bryson City is looking for quilters or people who want to learn to quilt to participate in a quilting bee an hour or two a month. The storytelling center will provide the space, quilting frame, supplies, refreshments and a great atmosphere for quilters to come and share the art of quilting.  All you need to do is bring cloth squares and volunteer 1 to 1½ hours a month for quilting.

Craft Festival at the 1886 Old Mill

June 19, 9:30 AM – 5 PM the Historic 1886 Grist Mill on the edge of the Cherokee Reservation is hosting a Craft Festival. The Mill is Cherokee's newest attraction and includes a Country Store with fresh ground cornmeal, grits, jams, honey, country ham, candles and quality gifts. The 1886 room is full of antiques, lamps furniture, china and advertising signs.  The work of  60+ Cherokee Artists is offered - carvings, baskets, pipes and beadwork to name a few. Collectors will find Civil War, Indian artifacts, Southern pottery and rare one of a kind items.The Historic 1886 Grist Mill is located South of Cherokee 1 mile, 3082 US 441 N. Stone Mountain Overlook Giclée Released

North Carolina artist Teresa Pennington's final giclée in a commemorative series celebrating the Blue Ridge Parkway, Stone Mountain Overlook, is completed and available for purchase. The three other scenic overlooks captured in this series are Richland Balsam, Grandfather Mountain, and Courthouse Valley.

Naomi Boretz is a widely acclaimed artist who has exhibited her work throughout the country and has received various prestigious awards. Although she works in many different mediums, this drawing in the collection, Mountain Streams, was inspired by a road trip Boretz made through North Carolina. Paint! opens at Echo Gallery

Toe River Studio Tour this Weekend

June 11 - 13    Toe River Studio Tour   Over 100 studios and galleries in Burnsville, Spruce Pine, Bakersville and Little Switzerland, NC are open for what is called "the premier open studio tour in the country". The Toe River Arts Council sponsors this annual, free arts and crafts studio open house event and has provided map guides for distribution. To take the Tour all you need is the guide, and on the day of the Tour, follow the red, arrowed Tour signs to your destinations. The new map guide this year features some 40 pages that include colored photographs of artwork from each participant as well as a section featuring our local sponsors, who are supporting the tour.
