Heartwood Gallery Cecbrates American Craft Week

Teapot by Ronan Peterson
American Craft -original, beautiful, and enduring- enriches our lives and celebrates our national history. Everyday thousands of American artists share their vision and talent and everyday galleries across the country open their doors to display and promote their works. Celebrate American Craft Week by visiting a gallery or studio in your region and participate in the creative economy.

Heartwood Gallery is focusing on several North Carolina artists this entire month. Jim and Shirl Parmentier make their ceramic lamps and serving pieces together in their Mars hill studio. Using slabs and coils they transform clay into vessels and then carve and glaze the surface to uniquely beautiful effect. The first grouping of lamps this year was quickly scooped up and we expect to have more in our windows by American Craft Week.

Deb Karash creates jewelry in her studio in Marshall where she focuses on surface design and fabrication giving each piece an intimate quality. Deb suggests "something personal is expressed in the wearing of handmade jewelry" and we could not agree more.

Ronan Peterson works in his Chapel Hill studio and we are excited to add his functional forms to the gallery's ceramic collection this October. His glaze palette is rich, colorful, and fun and his pieces reflect the
skilled hands of a professional potter who obviously enjoys his work.

Heartwood Gallery is located at 21 East Main Street in Saluda NC

American Craft Week Event: "Regarding the History of Objects" lecture

October 13, 4 PM at the Haywood Community College Auditorium "Regarding the History of Objects" lecture by Anna Fariello, Director of the Craft Rival Project at Western Carolina University. Haywood's Professional Crafts Program in partnership with Handmade in America and the Center for Craft, Creativity and Design is pleased to sponsor a special lecture as part of American Craft Week in Western North Carolina.

Fariello will speak on the collective identity of craft.  The talk, derived from "Objects and Meaning," a book Fariello co-edited and to which she contributed two chapters, will address how academic disciplines and cultural institutions have assigned meaning to expressive objects over time. Fariello argues that it is not effective to examine craft using the language and system of evaluation for art history and that craft must have its own discipline-specific vocabulary. "I used to think that it was possible to carry on deeper conversations about craft using the formalized language shared by art history, aesthetics and criticism," Fariello said. "I no longer believe this. The very term 'fine art' negates the egalitarian values of craft and its influence upon the visual arts."

The event is free and open to the public.
