Special flameworking opportunity at Penland this summer

May 27 - June 8:  Sculpting with the Flame: Abstract Expression with André Gutgesell
Session 1 in the flameworking studio:

This class will cover special techniques for creating sculpture from glass tubing and rods. After a short introduction to the peculiarities of working with soft glass, especially tubing, students will learn to build objects using the montage technique. Expression through color and abstract imagery will also be part of this class. Intermediate level; basic flameworking skills required.
Flameworker Shane Fero writes, "Andre Gutgesell is a glass artist, designer and montage master from the edge of Lauscha in Ernstthal, Germany in the Thuringian forest where he maintains his studio with his wife and fellow artist, Rebekka. His work exhibits clean, beautiful forms and colors with elegant design, mostly in the montage tradition. He studied with Kurt Wallstab and Uta Feiler and has had the influences of other montage masters living and working in his vicinity. He received his Master's Certification from The School for Glass in Lauscha in 1991. Among his long history of exhibitions, Andre has shown at the Museum of Glass Arts in Immenhausen, the Museum for Glass in Lauscha, and the Museum for Modern Glass in Coburg, Germany, and won the Immenhauser Glass Prize in 2003. He has taught at various institutions in Germany as well.

Andre has only taught once before in the US at the Pittsburgh Glass Center in 2006 after he demonstrated at the St. Louis GAS conference. Apart from Kurt Wallstab, who demonstrated around the U.S. in the 1980's and taught a formal class at Pilchuck in 1991, and Thomas Mueller-Lizt who, demonstrated and taught here at Penland, we have not had the privilege to observe or take classes from these German Masters in the US. They are the ones who pioneered these wonderful montage techniques in soft glass. Andre's class at Penland School of Crafts this summer is a rare opportunity for people to study with him and take advantage of Penland's bringing this wonderful glass artist from Germany."
