Cherokee County Arts Council Calls for Artists and Crafters

The Cherokee County Arts Council, a newly formed non-profit organization, has  announced plans for promoting all forms of art. One of the first major goals of the Arts Council is to create more arts programming in the local public school system. The Council is compiling a database of local artists and craftspeople who would like to be involved with arts programming in schools and other Arts Council activities. Artists will benefit from recognition and exposure for their work, while the Arts Council will have a strong core of artists to work with.

If you are an artist who would like to participate in, and be informed of the Cherokee County Arts Council's activities, please contact Kathleen Nolte at 828-361-9584. Visit the website at www.cherokeeartscouncil.org.

Work of the Week at the Asheville Art Museum

The "Work of the Week" in the Asheville Art Museum's permanent collection is a 1983, Serigraph on paper, 20.1"x15.1", Gift of The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation. 1997.01.03.65A by Anni Albers, untitled from Connections Portfolio.

The wife of color theorist and abstract painter Josef Albers, Anni Albers contributed significantly to the world of art with her detailed skill in textiles and weaving.  Anni Albers became especially interested in experimenting with various weaving materials such as silk, cotton and linen and came up with her own unique weaving style reminiscent of abstract paintings, creating geometric shapes from the threads.

This piece is from Anni Albers’ collection called the Connections Portfolio, consisting of nine unique works in Geometric Abstraction created between 1925 and 1983. The Asheville Art Museum currently holds all nine pieces from the Connections Portfolio. Part of the collecting focus at the Asheville Art Museum is on significant pieces from Black Mountain College artists. During the Albers' 16-year tenure at the college, Anni Albers founded the weaving workshop and taught weaving and designing with a hands-on approach.  For more information about this artist, visit the museum's Permanent Collection online.

August 28, 10 AM - 3 PM the Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center will host a beginner’s level basket weaving class. Participants will make a small Market Basket. Before there were brown paper bags or plastic totes, there was the Market Basket. It was used to carry produce to market to sell, and then brought home full of needed staples. The class is $35 which includes the materials needed to make an 8” x 12” basket with handle. Participants should plan to bring a bag lunch and a few supplies from home. Renowned ceramic artist Karen Karnes has created some of the most iconic pottery of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. The body of work she has produced in her more than sixty years in the studio is remarkable for its depth, personal voice, and consistent innovation. Many of her pieces defy category, invoking body and landscape, pottery and sculpture, male and female, hand and eye.

Equally compelling are Karnes's experiences in some of the most significant cultural settings of her generation: from the worker-owned cooperative housing of her childhood, to Brooklyn College under modernist Serge Chermayeff, to North Carolina's avant-garde Black Mountain College, to the Gate Hill Cooperative in Stony Point, New York, which Karnes helped establish as an experiment in integrating art, life, family, and community.

This book, designed to accompany an exhibit of Karnes's works organized by Peter Held, curator of ceramics for the Arizona State University Art Museum's Ceramic Research Center, offers a comprehensive look at the life and work of Karnes. Edited by highly regarded studio potter Mark Shapiro, it combines essays by leading critics and scholars with color reproductions of more than sixty of her works, providing new perspectives for understanding the achievements of this extraordinary artist.
