Cloth Fiber Workshop offers Heat Transfer Printing on Recycled Synthetics on Friday and Saturday, June 17 & 18 with Amy Putansu. Thrift shops (and maybe your attic!) are filled with old curtain sheers (among other synthetic things) that have a lovely transparent, lightweight drape. This is a perfect scenario of affordable materials for surface design projects!
In this class you'll transform second-hand fabrics using disperse dyes in a non-toxic way. Using a heat press and home iron, you can simultaneously transfer dye and set permanent folds and pleats on polyester, nylon, acrylic and acetate. (Synthetic fibers are the only type that will permanently pleat, fold, or crease with heat, even staying through washing!)
Functional forms like tote bags, scarves, etc., for these fabrics, and appropriate seam and edge finishing—both hand and machine will be discussed. Resources and tips will be shared so that anyone can continue this technique in their own home safely. Level of experience: all levels. Fee: $175 + materials fee. Register HERE.
