Penland Receives Generous Donation from Blacksmith

Iron studio coordinator Daniel Beck overlooks smithing donation
Penland School of Crafts has received a remarkable donation from Ed Crane. Ed is a blacksmith who lives in Little Switzerland NC, just a ways uphill from Penland. His age forced him to give up blacksmithing, so he gave Penland everything in his shop: lock, stock, and boxes of nuts and bolts.

The donation includes several large tools that will go right into the iron shop, many hand tools, and a few pieces of equipment that are needed elsewhere on campus. Thanks, Ed!

Penland announces application deadlines for summer scholarships and studio assistantships

February 17 by 5 PM - Applications for summer scholarships and studio assistantships are due at Penland School of Craft. These applications must be mailed (keep in mind that, depending on your location, overnight services may not actually deliver to Penland overnight). Complete information about scholarships is here. Information about studio assistantships is here.

If you are applying as a full-paying student, the deadline to have your application included in the early-registration lottery is 5:00 PM on Friday, February 10. You may apply by mail, fax, or online using our electronic registration form. Most of our classes do not fill through the lottery, and we continue accepting students until the classes begin, so there's plenty of time to enroll in a summer class, but if you've already decided, you'll want to get that application to us by February 10. Complete summer registration information is here.

Penland Online Sales Support Classes, Studios and Scholarships

Art for Penland is a web-based art sales program designed to support Penland School of Crafts classes, programs, studios, and scholarships through the sale of art contributed by artists and other donors.

Funds from the sale of these items go directly to Penland School of Crafts. Penland's fees for tuition, room, and board cover less than half the annual expense for classes, outreach programs, and services to artists. Your contribution directly benefits the artists and students who study and work here. Help us sustain Penland's exceptional programs and the school's leadership in the field of craft education.

Winter Studio Rentals at Penland School of Crafts

Penland doesn't offer classes in the winter, but that doesn't mean the studios are empty. Each winter, there is a small but lively community on the hill made up of staff members and winter renters. The books, clay, glass, iron, metals, photo, textiles, and wood studios are available in January and February for folks who wish to work independently--the letterpress and print studios are available in February. Housing is also available.
