Handmade in America last Minute Donations

a message from Handmade in America:
HandMade in America is close to the end of our Annual Fund campaign, and we are ALMOST at our $5,000 goal! There are only a few days left, and every dollar donated helps us get that much closer. You could make the difference - if 20 generous people gave $100, we would reach our goal in no time!

It is a scary, complex economic reality out there, with the recession, shifts in the economy, charged political environment, and increasing budget cuts. Government programs and funding are slashed every day. This shifting landscape affects us all; it impacts the availability of jobs, the businesses we interact with every day, and the towns we call home. We all want healthy, thriving, and exciting places to call home, but our region needs organizations that work to make this happen!

This is what HandMade does; we are in the business of you! We know what is good for the region is good for us all. Today we need your help. Your investment, through a year-end gift, will ensure our work continues to work for the good of all our lives. I ask you to donate today – and right now a matching gift means your donation doubles its impact!

Donating is easy: click the above link, visit our website at handmadeinamerica.org, or send in your donation to our office at 125 S. Lexington Ave., Suite 101, Asheville, NC 28801. For questions or to donate over the phone, contact our Manager of Engagement Helene Herbert at hherbert@handmadeinamerica.org or (828) 252-0121 x306. You may also contact me at glenncox@handmadeinamerica.org or (828) 252-0121 x308.

Thank you for your support of our work – it an investment in our region that is definitely worthwhile!

Penland School of Crafts Annual Donations

A Message from Gay  Smith

My experience of Penland is about connection: life, creativity, hands, heart, materials, mentors, students, colleagues, community, and friends, all connected in a beautiful web like the warps and wefts on Penland's looms.

I first came to Penland in 1985 with a studio assistant scholarship. It was a life-changing experience made possible by the generosity of others. Since then I have been a resident artist, an instructor, a community member, and a trustee, and I know that any amount we contribute to Penland's annual fund makes a difference. Our donations support everything from the not-so-glamorous water system to the priceless experiences of new scholarship students. They help create the fabric of Penland, and they strengthen our connection with this special place.

I invite you to join me this year as a donor to the Penland annual fund, and my deep thanks go to those who have already made a gift.

Sincerely,
Gay Smith

Asheville Seed Company Features Local Artist Peter Loewer

Renowned Botanical Illustrator Peter Loewer collaborated with Sow True Seed for their 2014 Catalog Cover.  Sow True Seed, based in Asheville NC, offers exclusively open-pollinated, non-hybrid, untreated seed that remains true-to-type when saved and replanted. For their annual catalog Sow True Seed collaborates with a local artist and this year's cover art is based on the incredible pen and ink illustrations of Peter Loewer.

Peter is a well-known local writer and botanical artist. His book, The Wild Gardener, was named one of "the best 75 garden books of the 20th Century" by the American Horticultural Society. He has an Asheville-based garden call-in radio show, he's a contributing editor for Carolina Gardener and also a popular public speaker.  Peter also teaches illustration at AB Tech, the NC Arboretum and Montreat Elderhostel.

"This isn't just a list of seeds – it's a growing guide and gardening inspiration rolled into one!" says Carol Koury, Sow True Seed's Founder. "At events people always ask, 'Are these free?', and are surprised when we say YES!"

The 2014 Sow True Seed catalog is at the printers and the first run will be ready for pick-up by mid-December. Get yours, hot off the press, by signing up at www.sowtrueseed.com.

This is the second year that Sow True Seed has collaborated with a local artist to produce their catalog cover. In 2013 Jenny Greer, voted 2012 'Best of WNC' in graphic design, created a beautiful illustration for Sow True Seed's annual catalog cover art. The art went on to inspire Sow True Seed's t-shirt design and has attracted admiration in Asheville and across America.

Cloth Fiber Workshop Offers two more Workshops for 2013

November 23 - Contemporary Rug Hooking with Yarn with Betsy Archer. Rug hooking! Learn to create contemporary designs with yarn on linen. First you'll prepare the linen for hooking and then transfer a pattern onto the fabric. Then you'll learn to color plan your project and use rug-hooking tools. Everyone will use the same pattern but you'll be able to change the design to make it unique. Level of Expertise: beginner/intermediate. Fee: $85 + materials.

December 7 - Shibori, Silk, and Sericin with Amy Putansu. In this one day workshop you'll explore a variety of traditional shibori techniques on silk organza. First you'll create resists with shibori then place the fabric into a silk-scour bath. The resisted areas will retain the crispness of organza while the areas left exposed will dissolve into a very fine sheet of silk. Next you'll over-dye the cloth with fiber reactive dyes resulting in a surface design pattern with lovely textural and visual effects. This process can also be applied to hand woven silk with sericin—examples of this will be discussed for those interested in weaving their own fabric. Level of Expertise: all levels. Fee: $85 + materials.

To register for workshops call 828.505.2958, register online or stop by the studio, Mon-Sat, 10 am - 4 pm.

The Center for Craft, Creativity and Design Announces New Location

The Center for Craft, Creativity and Design
Relocates to Downtown Asheville

submitted by Stephanie Moore, Executive Director

Over the past two years, the Center's board and staff have considered and discussed our core purpose - who we are and what we would like to accomplish in the future. During the planning process, it became most evident that the Center needed to relocate in order to increase our visibility, as well as strengthen and expand programs. Last August the Center purchased 67 Broadway, our new home in downtown Asheville. As we move forward, the Center would like to extend sincere appreciation to the residents and organizations in Hendersonville that supported our mission for eighteen years.

Western North Carolina has historically been, and continues to be, a vital center for craft production in the United States. This permanent location provides us assurance towards the future - a place to be, to dig deep, and to grow. A gift from the Windgate Charitable Foundation made this purchase possible. Subsequent gifts we received from Fleur Bresler and The Bresler Family Foundation will allow us to open our renovated space debt free. We are forever grateful.

With this change also comes the separation from the University of North Carolina, which has provided foundational support since the beginning. The Center will continue to prioritize craft in higher education, as well as the scholarship of American craft, both in the region and beyond. Our mission to advance the understanding of craft through research, critical dialogue, and professional development remains steadfast.

We are excited about the plans ahead and look forward to opening our doors in early 2014. As always, keep us informed of the things in craft that matter to you most and we will do the same.
